Bima Bharosa Portal 2026: How to File and Track an IRDAI Insurance Complaint

A Quick Summary

Bima Bharosa is IRDAI’s official portal for registering complaints regarding insurance policies, services, and claim rejections. The portal originated from a rebranding of the earlier Integrated Grievance Management System (IGMS) in 2022. However, a policyholder is first required to raise his/her complaint directly with the insurer. If there is no reply or the answer doesn’t help, you can escalate your complaint on the Bima Bharosa portal using your mobile number and OTP, uploading your documents, and saving the token number to track your complaint.

Ever experienced your insurance claim getting rejected or the policy getting cancelled without a clear explanation, or the worst that can happen is that your insurer doesn't even respond to your repeated complaints?

Most policyholders in such situations are not sure how to address the issue or who to approach. IRDAI has made this easier with an official portal called Bima Bharosa, where you can raise your complaint formally and track its status. Moreover, the portal is not merely for complaints about rejected claims. You can also raise complaints about delayed claims, mis-selling, premium issues, wrong policy details and poor service across life, health and general insurance.

But do you know? How it works and how to register a complaint on the portal? In this guide, we will explain everything you need to know, including what the Bima Bharosa Portal is, how to file a complaint online, how to check your Bima Bharosa complaint status, what documents you may need, and what to do if your issue remains unresolved.

What Is the Bima Bharosa Portal?

Bima Bharosa is IRDAI’s official online portal where policyholders can file complaints against insurance companies, agents, or intermediaries. It is the upgraded version of the Integrated Grievance Management System (IGMS), which IRDAI set up in 2011.

“According to IRDAI data, the Bima Bharosa portal handled nearly 2.58 lakh grievances in FY 2024-25 and around 2.97 lakh complaints in FY 2025-26. The majority of these were resolved within the year, showing that the system is actively used by policyholders across life, health, and general insurance.” Source: IRDAI Annual Report 2024-25 and Lok Sabha Unstarred Question No. 1203 (27 July 2026).

Once you register a complaint on the portal, it goes into both the insurer’s system and IRDAI’s repository. Status updates from the company appear on the portal in real time, so you can stay up to date on your complaint status. IRDAI uses the data to monitor how well companies handle grievances and to enforce timelines.

Note: For any insurance complaint, you must first contact your insurer’s Grievance Redressal Officer (GRO) through the insurer’s website, email, call centre, or a written letter. If the insurer does not resolve your complaint within 14 days, or you are not satisfied with the response, you can move ahead and file your complaint on the IRDAI grievance portal.

Who can file a complaint on Bima Bharosa Portal?

Any policyholder or claimant (the person entitled to receive the claim amount) can file a complaint on the Bima Bharosa portal against an insurance company, agent, or intermediary regulated by IRDAI. Only the policyholder or the claimant can file a complaint. IRDAI does not entertain complaints filed on someone’s behalf by advocates, agents, or any other third party.

If you are covered under a group or employer-provided policy (for example, a corporate health insurance plan), you can still file a complaint as the insured beneficiary with the help of your master policy number and proof of coverage. Moreover, non-resident Indians who hold an Indian insurance policy can also register and file complaints with an active Indian mobile number for OTP verification.

What Types of Insurance Complaints Can Be Filed?

You can use the portal for life, health and general insurance complaints. The most common ones are:

  • Insurance claim rejection complaint: You can file a complaint if your claim was rejected unfairly.
  • Insurance claim delay complaint: If the insurer is taking too long to settle your claim.
  • Less payment received: You can also file a complaint if you have received less money than your claimed amount.
  • Mis-selling: If the policy was sold to you with wrong or misleading promises.
  • Premium and refund problems: If you are charged the wrong premium amount or have not received any refund amount.
  • Policy and service issues: If there are any mistakes in policy details, delays in changes, or poor customer support services.
  • Agent misconduct: If an agent or intermediary misbehaves with you or breaks the code of conduct for insurance agents.

Documents Required For Insurance Complaint On Bima Bharosa Portal

Before you begin filing your complaint on the Portal, here are the most important documents that you must have to fill out and attach to your complaint:

  • Policy Document: You must have your correct policy document, including the policy number, policy copy, and the name of the insurer.
  • Claim papers: Claim number, claim form, hospital bills, and discharge summary (for health claims) must be available with you.
  • Insurer's response: The rejection letter, the settlement letter, or the delay email must be kept as a record.
  • Any Previous communication: E-mails, letters, and the complaint reference number you got from the insurer.
  • A short Description: A short description of the complaint that you are filing or any previous history associated with it.
  • Your contact details: An active mobile number and email ID. You will need the mobile number for OTP verification.

What to Do if Your Insurance Complaint is Not Resolved?

If your issue is still not solved after you have complained to your insurer and filed your insurance complaint online on the portal, you can approach the Insurance Ombudsman. The Insurance Ombudsman is an independent authority that helps individual policyholders resolve disputes with insurance companies, and it does not charge any fee. You need to send a written complaint to the Ombudsman office that covers your area.

Here are the important things to keep in mind:

  • Time limit: File your complaint within one year from the date when your complaint was rejected, ignored, or not replied to satisfactorily by your insurer.
  • Contact your insurer first: Before you file your complaint with the Ombudsman, you must have already raised the issue with your insurer and the IRDAI complaint portal.
  • Settlement first: The Ombudsman may first try to settle the matter between you and the insurer. If that does not work, a written decision is passed.
  • Claim value limit: The Insurance Ombudsman can take up your complaint only if the compensation you are asking for is up to ₹50 lakh.

How to Check Unclaimed Insurance Amounts on Bima Bharosa?

Many people also lose track of old policies sometimes, since there is no single place to see all of them. IRDAI has recently proposed maintaining a Public Insurance Registry, which could help by bringing complete policy details of a policyholder, like different types of policies, unclaimed amount, etc in one view. But it is still only a proposal.

As of now, you can also check your unclaimed amount through the Bima Bharosa portal. In case the policyholder has passed away, the legal heirs may also need to claim through the insurer, usually with proof of relationship.

How to use the unclaimed amount facility?

  • Go to the official Bima Bharosa portal and click Unclaimed Amount on the home page.
  • Enter your details, such as your name and mobile number.
  • Choose your insurance company from the list.
  • Click the Submit button.
  • Download the file to see if any amount is pending in your name.

Note: Under the Senior Citizens' Welfare Fund rules, amounts that remain unclaimed for more than 10 years are transferred to that fund. Therefore, you must track and claim your amount within 10 years.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Filing an Insurance Complaint

Most people make certain common mistakes while filing their insurance complaint on the portal, which can slow down their complaint progress.

Here are some of the most obvious mistakes you should be watchful of:

  • Submitting incomplete policy or claim details: Missing details make it harder for the insurer and IRDAI to look into your issue, and they may ask you to send them again, which can delay the complaint resolution.
  • Not attaching the right documents: Some people attach the wrong policy copy and claim form or rejection letter. This will result in sending the correct details later and more wasted time.
  • Not saving the complaint reference number: After you submit your complaint, you get a token number to track the complaint. If you lose it, checking the complaint’s status may become difficult.
  • Ignoring the insurer’s follow-up requests: The insurer may reply, ask for more details, or mark the complaint as closed. Check your SMS, email, and the portal regularly for any more details required by the insurer.
  • Trusting the unauthorized sources: The portal does not ask for payment of any kind. Anyone who asks for a fee to "speed up" your complaint or claim, whether by phone, message, email, or a look-alike website, is not genuine.

What POSP and Insurance Agents Should Know About Bima Bharosa Complaints?

If you work with customers as a POSP or insurance agent, keep these points in mind:

  • Guide, but don't file for them: You can explain the process, help collect documents, and show customers how to track their complaint. The complaint itself must be filed by the policyholder or claimant.
  • Never charge for complaint support: The portal is free, so do not take any fee for helping your customers file or "speed up" a complaint.
  • Don't promise outcomes or timelines: Resolution depends on the insurer and the nature of the complaint; therefore, don't claim any outcomes.
  • Follow the code of conduct: Complaints can also be filed against agents and intermediaries, so always stay compliant with IRDAI's guidelines for insurance agents.

Conclusion

Bima Bharosa gives policyholders an official platform to raise insurance complaints and track them. The process is straightforward. If it is still not resolved after 14 days, file it on the Bima Bharosa portal and attach your policy details and documents. Save your token number, check your status regularly, and reply to any follow-up.

If you are still not satisfied, you can approach the Insurance Ombudsman as the next step to resolve your complaint.  Knowing how the portal works can save you and your customers a lot of time when a claim goes wrong.
